Par SUK JOSEF. First scholarly-critical edition
The single-movement String Quartet #2 by Josef Suk (1874-1935) was written at the height of his compositional powers. Completed in Krecovice in May 1911, this demanding work, with its complex harmonies and motivic structure, seemed avant-garde for its day: the Berlin premiere of November 1912 was accompanied by protests from the audience.
Now Zdenek Nouza has edited the first scholarly-critical edition of this piece. The principal source is the first edition in full score, published by Simrock in Berlin. But Nouza has also consulted the printed parts (containing additions of great interest to performers) as well as the engraver's copy used for the printed score (with autograph corrections from the composer) and additional sources such as sketches.

In 1892 Josef Suk (1874-1935) a mere 18 years of age contributed his piece Melody to a collection of simple works for Violin (for two three or four Violins and for Violin with Piano accompaniment) called The Young Violinist published by the Prague-based firm Jos. R. Vilimek (several books issued per year). This short charming and technically undemanding piece for young violinists which is possibly more familiar to Czech audiences in arrangements for other combinations of instruments (Violin and Piano or solo Piano) was published once again in its original version for two Violins to mark the 70th anniversary of Suk's death(2005).The whereabouts of the autograph of this work is unknown; the editor of the new edition Zdenek Nouza based his revisions on the original carefully prepared edition from 1892. The bowings are Suk's own (he was an excellent violinist) but no fingerings have been added since the piece can be played by violinists of varying technical proficiency; first position alone would suffice however a fuller richer sound would be gained with greater mastery of the instrument.

Josef Suk’s Piano Quartet (1874 1935) quickly became a standard work not least as a result of the extensive concerts given by the Bohemian Quartet in which Suk was second violinist. This is however the first scholarly-critical edition of this work. It is based largely on a revision of the first edition which contains Suk’s alterations of 1914 and appeared in 1924 on the first copy as well as on newly discovered copies of the parts. Valuable information has also been extracted from printed parts of which the original copies are now no longer extant.

Roughly eight months after the death of Anton n Dvorák (1 May 1904) his son-in-law Josef Suk began to compose a funeral symphony. While he was working on it fate struck a second time with the death of his beloved wife Otilie. He dedicated the five-movement symphony to Dvorák and his daughter Otilie and named it after the Angel of Death ?Asrael?.The principal source for our edition is the first edition of the score (1907) supplemented by the corrections Suk entered at the suggestion of conductor Václav Talich (1921). The most significant change was the expansion of the orchestra to include ad libitum parts for the fifth and sixth horns.Firstscholarly-critical editionIncludes Suk?s later corrections including ad libitum parts for the fifth and sixth hornsDetailed Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) and Critical Commentary (Eng) by the editorPerformance material (BA9532-72) available for hire

Magnum opus of Suk?s Piano music.First ever scholarly-critical edition.Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) and Critical Commentary (Eng) by the editor. The cycle ??ivotem a snem? (Things Lived and Dreamt) by Josef Suk (1874 1935) is his magnum opus for the Piano and has been called the ?diary of an artist?. Although Suk?s musical language never exceeds the bounds of tonality his wealth of resources the flexible harmony chords of stacked thirds and meticulous performance instructions were new to the Bohemia of his day.The autograph contains many cuts overwritings and barely decipherable passages yet it is carefully prepared and largelyidentical to the first edition of 1909. This first scholarly-critical edition takes all source variants into account for the first time.

Study Score.
